oral health during pregnancy

Ever heard the saying, “gain a child, lose a tooth?” It’s based on an old wives’ tale that every time a woman gives birth, she’s going to lose a tooth—on the premise that pregnancy impedes calcium absorption and bone density. Combined with the hormonal changes that occur while pregnant, it could impact your oral health. None of this is true. Although pregnant women face a higher risk of certain dental problems, all of these issues are preventable through some diligent oral hygiene. This also includes regular visits with your Bloomsburg general dentists. Whether you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, Hamilton Dental Care wants to make sure you understand the importance of dental care throughout this critical phase in your life.

There is a link between pregnancy and poor oral health

Researchers at New York University’s College of Dentistry completed a recent study with some disturbing statistics regarding pregnant women and their oral health. The study examined 2,635 pregnant women battling dental problems, which increased with every subsequent time they got pregnant. Their findings included that women with three children had, on average, four fewer teeth than mothers of two children.

Why does this happen? Specifically, pregnant women face a higher risk of developing gum disease. The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy increase susceptibility to the bacterial infection that leads to gum disease. The potential risks don’t end there. The frequent vomiting that occurs from morning sickness can wear away your tooth enamel, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay as well as injury. Pregnant women often experience dry mouth as well, and a diminished saliva flow deprives them of the natural protection against the accumulation of cavity-causing bacteria. These problems can be multiplied by neglecting regular visits to the dentist, which may be difficult for expecting mothers—especially if they already have children—because they’re too busy taking care of their children and skip dental appointments.

Prevention is your best defense

This credo applies to both your oral health and overall wellness. It’s easier to treat potential problems by identifying them in the earliest possible stage or prevent them from occurring through a diligent regimen of hygiene that includes brushing twice per day, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist every six months for a check-up. If you’re pregnant, Hamilton Dental Care recommends scheduling an additional check-up at your earliest convenience. This adjustment to the schedule also means you’ll avoid having to return to the dentist during your third trimester, when it may be uncomfortable sitting in the dental chair for an extended period of time.
