Crowns
Bloomsburg and Danville PA
A crown is the preferred restorative treatment when the exterior of a tooth becomes severely damaged due to decay or injury. A crown prevents total tooth loss by replacing the entire exterior structure of a tooth.
When are crowns necessary?
- Following a root canal procedure
- Repair a tooth that is broken or fractured
- Repair a tooth that is weak, misshapen, brittle or short
- Repair damage caused by a metal filling
- Treat a large area of tooth decay
All of our dental crowns are custom made to fit each tooth. During your consultation, the dentist will assess your needs, and determine which type of crown is best for you.
Hamilton Dental Care offers two types of crowns:
PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns are ideal for teeth that endure more stress such as back teeth or molars. A PFM crown has the strength of a traditional metal crown, thanks to a thin metal thimble that is designed to fit over the tooth. That metal shell is then covered with porcelain in a high-heat furnace, and the exterior porcelain is color matched to blend in with your natural teeth.
Metal-free crowns are made of top-quality dental porcelain. Not only are these custom-made crowns matched to look identical to your remaining teeth, but they also will have a perfect fit and long-lasting bond. Porcelain crowns are perfect for patients with a metal allergy, or for front teeth that are the most visible when a person smiles.
What can I expect during a crown procedure?
Crowns usually require two visits to the dentist. At the first visit, the dentist removes any decayed or damaged area of the tooth. An impression of the tooth will be taken, and a temporary restoration will be worn while the dental lab handcrafts your permanent crown that will be placed at a subsequent visit.
