Wisdom teeth can cause pressure on existing teeth
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually create their own set of problems when they erupt from the gum line. Or, there may not be enough room in the jaw for them to emerge properly from the gum line, which may cause tooth decay or a gum infection. Pressure created by these emerging wisdom teeth can crowd existing teeth by making them shift and become crooked or overlap.
Wisdom teeth begin to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25 years old. If there is not enough room in the mouth for wisdom teeth to emerge, they likely will become impacted, or place a significant amount of pressure on the other teeth. It’s important to have your teen visit the dentist at least twice a year to have their oral health including their wisdom teeth monitored.
