You probably already know that taking care of your teeth involves brushing twice a day, and hopefully you floss daily as well. But, did you realize that professional dental cleanings are as important for your oral health as at-home oral hygiene efforts? Routine dental cleanings and exams are not a ploy for your dentist to make more money. Instead, these professional dental cleanings are the only way that tartar buildup can be removed from your teeth, and provides a chance for the dentist to identify any potential oral health problems before they become bigger issues.

  1. Pain means something. Don’t ignore it

Many people experience some form of dental pain either from mild tooth sensitivity that comes and goes or a throbbing toothache. Regardless of how mild or sporadic your tooth pain may be, don’t ignore it. Healthy teeth should not hurt. So, if you feel discomfort, sensitivity, or pain, have your dentist check it out. While it could indicate you just need to switch to using a different kind of toothpaste, more severe pain could mean you have a tooth or gum infection, neither of which you want to ignore.

  1. Your gums need attention, too

When you brush your teeth, remember that your gums need some attention, too. Gently brush along your gum line as you brush your teeth. Also, don’t forget to floss! Flossing is the best way to clean between your teeth, and along the gum line. Skipping this step means bacteria is left lurking in the crevices of your gums, which also makes you more likely to develop gum disease.

  1. Rinse if you can’t brush

Ideally, we would all brush our teeth after each meal including lunch. But, most of us are too busy with our hectic work schedules to pause long enough and brush mid-day. In these instances at least rinse out your mouth with water to rinse away any sugars or bacteria that are lingering in your mouth. While rinsing isn’t quite the same as brushing, it is better than nothing. You might also want to consider chewing on some sugar-free gum that contains Xylitol, which is proven to reduce the risk of cavities. Plus it freshens your breath!
