Implants

If you have a missing tooth, a dental implant may be the best restorative solution for you. A dental implant is a permanent tooth replacement solution that also improves your smile and your oral health.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants consist of the following three components.

  • The implant itself is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jawbone, and during the healing process, it fuses to your bone to provide a stable foundation for a crown.
  • A crown, which will be customized in shape and color to match the rest of your natural teeth, is later placed after the healing process is complete.
  • An abutment, which connects the crown to the implant.

Benefits of dental implants

Replacing the tooth root with an implant protects you against jawbone recession, which inevitably occurs after a tooth is extracted. It also prevents your existing teeth from shifting into the space where the missing tooth resided.

Are dental implants predictable?

Implants have a 95 percent success rate but do require routine care, just like your natural teeth. Although an implant is permanent and resistant to decay, be sure to brush and floss your implant along with your other teeth as part of your existing oral hygiene routine.

Is a dental implant right for me?

An implant is not the recommended tooth replacement option for children. Patients with advanced stages of gum disease may require additional surgical treatments before the placement of a dental implant.

The dentist will evaluate your overall oral health to determine whether a dental implant is a viable tooth replacement option for you.
